This unusual artwork depicting an Inuit man, uses a technique particular to historic mapmakers. It requires tremendous skill and patience to achieve the depth of tones, shadows and highlights, and is a technique no longer used. The portrait is of a man who was a dear friend of Sir Wally – a shaman and a kind and generous soul who lived the traditional ways of the ancestors, and through whom the myths and stories of his people were passed.

This evocative drawing was both a depiction of the old man turning his face away from the bright lights and noise of civilisation towards home and nature; but also hints at his ability to be in both the here and now, and in the spirit world. It is a talisman of an artwork.

Pioneering polar explorer and artist Sir Wally Herbert spent his life exploring, mapping, drawing and recording the Polar Regions. He was an award-winning author, and was awarded several medals for his accomplishments. He was knighted for services to polar exploration. He was also an intuitive man who had a profound respect for the traditions and beliefs of the Inuit people.

Becoming an artist in later life, Sir Wally devoted his final years to recording in watercolours and oils the beauty and majesty of the Polar Regions and re-imagined historic expeditions or memories of time spent with the Inuit of Northwest Greenland. The deep respect and understanding he had for the polar wilds is imbued in every brushstroke.

His artworks are held in private collections around the world, and owned by celebrities and members of the Royal Family.

About Sir Wally

Sir Wally Herbert was a polar explorer of international distinction. He was the
leader of the first expedition to cross the Arctic Ocean by its longest axis – an epic journey that took a year-and-a-half to complete on constantly shifting, breaking polar pack ice, and the first man to reach the North Pole on foot. He was also responsible for mapping thousands of miles of new territory in Antarctica.

He was awarded several medals and a Knighthood for his achievements, and is regarded as being an icon of exploration.

Not just a pioneering explorer, Sir Wally was an award-winning author and gifted a
fine artist. His paintings have been bought by Royals as well as celebrities and private collectors. The father of Kari Herbert, he passed away in 2007, leaving an extraordinary legacy of stories, maps, research, discovery and a profound love and respect for the polar wilds.
